SPokane – Wayne Lee Lafferty, a 53-year-old resident of Kennewick, Washington, has been handed a ten-year sentence after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography. United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, Joseph H. Harrington, announced the severe punishment following Lafferty’s conviction on October 24, 2017.
Lafferty will also serve a fifteen-year term of court supervision post-prison and must register as a sex offender for life. The case highlights the relentless pursuit of child pornographers by federal authorities.
During an online undercover investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), agents identified Lafferty’s IP address distributing child pornography images. A federal search warrant was obtained for his residence, where over 47,000 images and video files were seized, including disturbing content involving infants and toddlers.
Lafferty confessed to viewing child pornographic material on his computer following the end of his state supervision for a prior conviction. Senior United States District Judge Edward F. Shea emphasized the psychological impact on the minor victims in his sentencing remarks.
Harrington stated that this case is an example of the collaborative efforts between HSI and the Southeast Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (SER-ICAC). The sentence serves as a stark warning to those who engage in such heinous acts.
This prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, a federal initiative targeting child sexual exploitation. The program integrates federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, ensuring their victims receive the necessary support.
