Amazon scam: KENOY STEWART, 27, of Bridgeport, has been sentenced to nine months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release for his role in an Amazon fraud scheme.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford. Stewart was found guilty of defrauding Amazon.com, Inc. of $1,063,762.82.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Stewart created multiple vendor accounts with Amazon, using false names, email addresses, and other identifying information to set up the accounts. He would then represent to Amazon that he was shipping them valuable merchandise, which he never actually sent. Stewart would later claim that the merchandise had been lost, providing fabricated documents to support his false claims.
Amazon sent Stewart a series of refunds for the purportedly lost merchandise, totaling $1,063,762.82. Judge Thompson ordered Stewart to pay full restitution.
This is not the first time someone involved in this scheme has been caught. Stewart’s brother, Oshane Stewart, was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment in September for defrauding Amazon of approximately $742,000. Another individual, Rajhni Yankana, was sentenced to five months of imprisonment and five months of home detention in September for defrauding Amazon of approximately $210,000.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from Amazon. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Conor M. Reardon and Christopher W. Schmeisser.
Stewart is currently free on a $50,000 bond and is required to report to prison on October 30.
