The gritty streets of Kent, Ohio, are once again the stage for a high-stakes drug drama. Mesawn Smith, also known as ‘Butter’, finds himself at the center of this storm after a federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment.
According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Smith stands accused of distributing less than 28 grams of crack cocaine on May 15 and May 25, 2012. The charges escalate further with allegations that on November 2, 2012, he possessed over 28 grams of the same drug with intent to distribute.
Should Smith be found guilty, his sentence will be a matter for the Court to determine after considering unique factors such as his prior criminal record and role in the offense. However, it’s important to note that sentences will not exceed the statutory maximum, which often falls short of the harshest penalties.
The investigation into these charges was a collaborative effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Youngstown Field Office and the Akron Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer is handling the prosecution of this case.
