Nena Kerny Kochuga, Jamaican Lottery Scam, Virginia 2023

NORFOLK, Va. – Nena Kerny Kochuga, a serial fraudster with a history of lottery scams, has pleaded guilty to her involvement in a Jamaican lottery scam that defrauded victims out of tens of thousands of dollars.

G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, warns, ‘We will not tolerate this criminal activity and will continue to prosecute these cases federally,’ emphasizing the devastating impact such scams have on elderly victims and their families.

According to court documents, Kochuga, 44, from Virginia Beach, collected payments from across the United States after informing them they had won a multi-million dollar lottery. She retained a cut of the money before wiring the rest to conspirators in Jamaica and other countries. Kochuga’s previous conviction for the same scheme in Virginia Beach Circuit Court does not deter her from this latest criminal endeavor.

Peter R. Rendina, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Washington Division, commits to protecting customers from predatory schemes, ensuring the Postal Service is not exploited for such fraudulent activities.

Kochuga faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on September 30 for mail fraud charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth M. Yusi prosecutes this case with Senior U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar accepting her plea.
