COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – Keshawn C. Houtz-Mayfield, 21, is headed to federal prison for 27 months after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm. The sentence, handed down April 11, 2024, underscores the relentless pursuit of those who flout gun laws, even as they’ve already been convicted of other crimes.
Federal agents executing a search warrant at Houtz-Mayfield’s Council Bluffs residence discovered the firearm. Court documents reveal he was a convicted felon at the time, making any possession of a weapon a clear violation of federal law. The specifics of the initial warrant execution weren’t disclosed, leaving questions about what prompted the search.
The case, investigated jointly by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), highlights the collaborative efforts aimed at keeping illegal weapons off the streets. While the type of firearm wasn’t specified in the announcement, the charge itself carries significant penalties.
U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa, announced the sentencing. Houtz-Mayfield will serve a three-year term of supervised release upon completion of his 27-month prison sentence. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning he will serve the full term before being eligible for release.
This case is being touted as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative intended to reduce violent crime and gun violence through a combination of focused law enforcement and community engagement. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in 2021, focusing on building trust with communities and supporting violence prevention programs. Critics, however, often question the true impact of such programs beyond the headline-grabbing convictions.
