California Election Official Names DEO to Combat Interference
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a move to protect the integrity of the November 8, 2016, general election, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert has named Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin C. Khasigian as the District Election Officer (DEO) for the Eastern District of California.
As DEO, Khasigian will be responsible for overseeing complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses, working in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington. The Eastern District of California includes 28 counties: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Lassen, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba.
‘Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud,’ Talbert said. ‘The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.’
The Justice Department has a vital role in deterring election fraud and discrimination at the polls and will combat violations wherever they occur. The agency seeks to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the election process by providing local points of contact within the department for the public to report possible election fraud and voting rights violations while the polls are open on election day.
Federal law protects against crimes such as intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input. Actions designed to interrupt or intimidate voters at polling places by questioning or challenging them, or by photographing or videotaping them under the pretext that these are actions to uncover illegal voting, may violate federal voting rights law.

In addition, the FBI will have special agents available in each field office and resident agency throughout the country to receive allegations of election fraud and other election abuses on Election Day.
