Kevin Cimeus, 21, of Miami, Convicted of Identity Theft Tax Fraud and Social Security Schemes

Florida – In a shocking turn of events, Kevin Cimeus, 21, of Miami, has been convicted of identity theft tax fraud and social security schemes. The case, which spanned four days, was a culmination of a joint effort between the FBI, IRS-CI, and SSA-OIG.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Cimeus was found to have stolen over 2,400 social security numbers and names of real people from thumb drives, laptop computers, iPad, his email account, and sheets of paper. He also recruited Miami Dade College students to allow him to use their Higher One Bank accounts to receive fraudulently obtained tax refunds.

Cimeus was convicted of ten counts, including conspiracy to steal government property or money, theft of government money or property, access device theft, and aggravated identity theft. He faces a maximum statutory sentence of up to five years in prison on the conspiracy count, ten years in prison on each of the theft of public money and access device theft counts, and a mandatory consecutive two years in prison on the aggravated identity theft counts.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gera R. Peoples. Sentencing is scheduled for September 4, 2014, before U.S. District Judge William J. Zloch.

Mr. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of the FBI in bringing Cimeus to justice. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting personal information and the severe consequences of identity theft.
