A devastating case of sleeping on the job has landed a Belleville man behind bars. Kevin L. Burris, 42, was caught dozing off at the wheel of his car in the middle of a busy street, and what he had in his possession will leave you stunned.

Burris pleaded guilty on June 6, 2016, to distributing cocaine base, also known as “crack” cocaine, to another individual for profit. The offenses took place in St. Clair County, Illinois, and carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine, with not less than 3 years’ supervised release.

But that’s not all – Burris was also found in possession of a Rossi, .357 revolver, which is a serious no-no given his prior felony conviction. This charge alone carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years’ supervised release.

According to court documents, Burris distributed cocaine base on May 28th and June 2nd, 2015. He even admitted to selling the substance for the last several years.

Burris was allowed to remain on bond, but his freedom will be short-lived. Sentencing is scheduled for August 30, 2016. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kit Morrissey, who obtained information leading to the charges through an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
