MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Kevin Ronnell Lynch, 55, is heading back to prison for 15 years after being sentenced yesterday for illegally possessing a firearm, authorities announced. The conviction adds to a decades-long rap sheet for the Minneapolis man, a repeat offender with a history of violent crime.
The bust went down October 30, 2022, when Brooklyn Center Police Department officers spotted a vehicle previously used to evade law enforcement. Inside, they found Lynch, seated alone in the back. Officers initiated a search after observing suspicious movement from Lynch. That search yielded a loaded Ruger model EC9 semiautomatic pistol tucked inside his jacket.
What makes this case particularly egregious? Lynch was already on pretrial release for two other firearm-related offenses at the time of his arrest. Federal prosecutors didn’t pull any punches, charging Lynch as an “armed career criminal” – a designation reserved for those with extensive and serious criminal histories.
And extensive it is. Since 1986, Lynch has racked up at least 14 felony convictions. The list reads like a catalog of violent offenses: aggravated robbery, assault, domestic violence, and even terroristic threats. This isn’t a first-time offender learning a harsh lesson; this is a career criminal consistently endangering the public.
Lynch pleaded guilty February 2, 2023, to being a felon in possession of a firearm as an armed career criminal. U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson handed down the 15-year sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. The case was a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Brooklyn Center Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan L. Sing led the prosecution. While a lengthy sentence, some will question if 15 years is enough to keep a repeat offender like Lynch off the streets, given his decades of criminal activity.
