Marquese Lamont Redmon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Minnesota 2022

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Marquese Lamont Redmon, 28, of Saint Paul, has confessed to being a prohibited person illegally packing heat. The feds say Redmon pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge stemming from a July incident in downtown Minneapolis.

According to court documents, Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 4th Street North on July 28, 2022. A review of surveillance footage quickly zeroed in on Redmon, allegedly caught on camera holding a 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol – complete with an extended drum magazine crammed with 43 rounds – both before and after the gunfire.

The video doesn’t paint Redmon as a hero. It allegedly shows him bolting from an SUV after the shooting, accepting the firearm from the driver, then ditching the weapon while making a quick getaway. The gun was recovered, and Redmon quickly became a person of interest. He’s got a record, folks – multiple prior felony convictions in Ramsey County, which permanently bars him from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law.

This wasn’t a simple mistake. Redmon knew he wasn’t supposed to have a gun. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Minneapolis Police Department teamed up on the investigation, piecing together the evidence from the street and the surveillance tapes. The case was brought by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Hillary A. Taylor.

Redmon’s guilty plea was entered before Judge Eric C. Tostrud in U.S. District Court. A sentencing date hasn’t been set yet, but expect a stiff penalty. Federal firearms violations carry significant prison time, and Redmon’s prior record won’t do him any favors. The Grimy Times will be there when the judge hands down the sentence.

This case is another example of how the ATF and local law enforcement are working to get guns out of the hands of those who are legally prohibited from possessing them. While the streets of Minneapolis continue to struggle with violence, officials hope convictions like Redmon’s will deter others from turning to firearms illegally. ”
