Keyshawn Savory, 25, Sentenced for Straw Purchasing Firearms
A Washington County man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role in straw purchasing firearms from several federally licensed firearms dealers in Pennsylvania.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Keyshawn Savory, 25, of Washington, Pennsylvania, acted as a straw purchaser on four different occasions between April and August 2021. He lied to the dealers, stating that the firearms were being purchased for himself, when in reality, he was buying them on behalf of another person.
The case was prosecuted under the new criminal provisions of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Congress enacted and the President signed in June 2022. The Act is the first federal statute specifically designed to target the unlawful trafficking and straw-purchasing of firearms.
Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the investigation that led to the successful prosecution of Savory.
United States District Judge Stephanie L. Haines imposed the sentence on Savory, which includes 24 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down on April 6, 2023.
The case highlights the importance of targeting the unlawful trafficking and straw-purchasing of firearms. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to hold individuals accountable for their actions and keep our communities safe.
