Athens Woman Convicted of Methamphetamine Trafficking

ATHENS, Ga. –– In a shocking turn of events, a local grandmother has been convicted of trafficking methamphetamine. Kimberly Garcia, 52, of Athens, Georgia, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possession of methamphetamine.

The case against Garcia began in June 2020, when a confidential source tipped off local law enforcement about her alleged involvement in drug distribution activities. The source claimed that Garcia often sold methamphetamine with her grandchildren in the car at the Airport Mini Mart in Athens.

Under surveillance, Garcia and her co-defendant, Corey Gresham, 38, drove to a Lawrenceville apartment complex where they met with a known methamphetamine supplier and a person associated with the Sureños criminal street gang. Garcia was observed entering the apartment with a bag, which was later recovered by law enforcement.

When deputies with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle driven by Gresham, he evaded law enforcement by speeding and running red lights. Gresham eventually abandoned the vehicle, but Garcia remained in the car with her two-year-old grandchild in the backseat. Officers recovered 37.94 grams of methamphetamine and drug distribution supplies from the vehicle and the area where Garcia attempted to flee law enforcement.

The case was investigated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, and the DEA. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tamara Jarrett is prosecuting the case.

Garcia faces a maximum sentence of 40 years imprisonment and a $5,000,000 fine. A co-defendant, Corey Gresham, 38, of Athens, previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a $5,000,000 fine. Sentencings for both defendants will be scheduled at a date determined by the Court.
