Columbia, SC – A 60-year-old Ladson man has been arrested on federal charges of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute fentanyl. Robert Mansfield made an initial appearance in federal court this afternoon, and a detention hearing and preliminary hearing have been scheduled for 11 a.m. on March 3, 2017.
According to the United States Attorney’s office, Mansfield is accused of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid that has been linked to numerous overdose deaths across the country.
The case is being investigated by Special Agents with ICE-Homeland Security Investigations, as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Postal Inspection Service, Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi of the Charleston office is prosecuting the case. Bianchi noted that all charges in this indictment are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The arrest of Mansfield is a significant blow to the region’s efforts to combat the growing opioid crisis. Fentanyl has been linked to numerous overdose deaths in South Carolina, and the arrest of Mansfield is a step towards holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
As the investigation continues, it is clear that the individuals involved in the trafficking of fentanyl are a threat to public safety. The people of South Carolina deserve to know that their law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to keep them safe.
