JACKSONVILLE, FL – A former Home Depot employee is facing a hefty prison sentence after pleading guilty to a brazen credit card fraud scheme that siphoned funds directly from the retail giant. Kimyada Latoya Knight, 41, of Jacksonville, admitted to initiating a series of fraudulent refunds, enriching herself at the expense of both the company and its customers.
The scheme, uncovered through an internal Home Depot review and a subsequent investigation by the U.S. Secret Service, spanned roughly eight months, from January to August of 2019. Knight, who worked in a department handling business and customer credit card accounts, exploited her position to process illegitimate refunds. Court documents reveal a pattern of abuse, with Knight allegedly manipulating the system to funnel money into accounts under her control.
The scope of the fraud was significant. Investigators determined Knight processed “a large number” of fraudulent transactions, targeting both customer and business credit card accounts. This wasn’t a matter of a few isolated incidents; it was a sustained effort to defraud Home Depot, leveraging her insider access to bypass security measures. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida is handling the prosecution, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin C. Frein leading the charge.
Once the fraudulent refunds were processed, Knight didn’t simply hold onto the funds. She actively transferred the payments to accounts she personally controlled, then used the ill-gotten gains for her own purposes. The exact amount of the stolen funds remains undisclosed, but authorities assure restitution will be sought for Home Depot as part of the sentencing.
The Secret Service’s Jacksonville Field Office played a crucial role in unraveling the scheme. Their investigation, building upon the initial findings of Home Depot’s internal security team, provided the evidence needed to secure Knight’s guilty plea. The agency’s expertise in financial crimes proved vital in tracking the flow of funds and connecting Knight to the fraudulent activity.
Knight now faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison. In addition to potential imprisonment, she will also be required to pay restitution to Home Depot for the full amount of the losses incurred due to her actions. Sentencing details will be announced at a later date, leaving Knight to await her fate for exploiting a position of trust for personal gain.
