Roger King, Mailing Threatening Communications, Indiana 2024

INDIANAPOLIS – Roger King, 39 years old, has been handed a severe punishment for his audacious plan to target the United States Supreme Court. The Indiana native was sentenced by Judge Sara L. Ellis to 48 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of mailing threatening communications.

King’s crimes began on November 9, 2021, while he was already incarcerated at New Castle Correctional Facility for state charges. In a chilling letter addressed to ‘Republican Justices,’ King promised to detonate a bomb inside the Supreme Court building in Washington D.C., declaring his intent to kill all Republican judges with ‘every intention’ of carrying out his terror plot.

Five months later, King struck again. This time, he mailed a letter containing a white powdery substance and explicit threats to two federal judges presiding over a civil case he had filed. The letter suggested the powder was anthrax or boric acid, sparking an immediate law enforcement response.

Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor emphasized the gravity of King’s actions, stating that ‘threats directed at members of the judiciary are direct attacks on the rule of law.’ Proctor praised the collaborative efforts of federal and local agencies in bringing King to justice.

The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Supreme Court Police, with support from multiple agencies including the Indiana State Police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas M. McGrath and Steven J. Lupa prosecuted the case as Special Attorneys in the Southern District of Indiana.

This sentence will run consecutively to the state sentence King is currently serving, ensuring he pays a steep price for his terrifying threats against our legal system.
