Spokane, Washington – In a shocking turn of events, a former law enforcement officer has been found guilty of attempting to entice a minor online. Koby Don Williams, a 49-year-old man from Washington state, was convicted of one count of Attempted Online Enticement of a Minor.
According to court documents, Williams was part of an undercover law enforcement operation in July 2022. He replied to a Craigslist ad and began chatting with a 13-year-old girl, who he believed to be a minor. Over the course of three days, Williams discussed the girl’s age, her rates for sex acts, and even mentioned his employment as a ‘cop.’ The two made arrangements to meet at a hotel for sex, but Williams was arrested when he arrived at the Quality Inn in Othello, Washington.
During the search of Williams’ vehicle and person, police found his Immigration and Customs Enforcement badge, two bottles of prescription medication, and $4,075 in cash. The money was discovered in a credit union envelope.
The trial, which began on May 13, 2024, was presided over by United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice. Sentencing in the matter is set for August 14, 2024.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref stated, ‘No one is above the law, and, as this case demonstrates, the U.S Attorney’s Office is fully committed to vigorously prosecuting those who target the most vulnerable members of our community.’
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The FBI, DHS/OIG, and the Othello Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Ann Wick handling the prosecution.
Koby Don Williams will face sentencing on August 14, 2024. The case highlights the importance of holding those in positions of trust accountable for their actions and the need for continued vigilance in protecting our communities from those who would seek to harm our children.
