PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS – In a shocking turn of events, KTX Limited and KTX Properties Inc. have been hit with a massive $3.5 million fine for flagrant violations of the Clean Air Act at their Port Arthur facility.
The court documents detail a catastrophic tank explosion that killed one worker and severely injured two others in March 2011. The incident was caused by KTX’s reckless authorization of welding work on a tank without proper safety measures, leading to the release of hazardous pollutants into the environment.
Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden blasted the company’s actions: “The dishonest failure to adhere to workplace standards and practices can lead to death and injury. The Justice Department is committed to enforcing environmental laws that protect workers.”
Crosby LP and Ramsey Properties LP have also been charged with falsifying records related to air pollution at their Crosby facility, adding to the severity of the case.
The plea agreement requires the companies to pay $3.3 million in fines and a further $200,000 to the Southern Environmental Enforcement Network for community service. EPA Special Agent Christopher R. Brooks emphasized the importance of proper chemical management: “When handled or stored improperly, chemicals can result in severe injuries or even death.”
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences that follow when corporations prioritize profit over the safety and well-being of their workers and the public.
