Idaho Man Admits to Stealing Rocks from Public Lands

BOISE – A Nampa man has pleaded guilty to stealing over 9,800 pounds of sandstone from public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). William Brian Kirkpatrick, 45, admitted to driving his truck onto BLM lands and selling the decorative rock for use in landscaping projects.

According to the plea agreement, Kirkpatrick stole more than 9,800 pounds of sandstone between November 2012 and June 2013. The sandstone retailed for $1,472 and was sold commercially. Kirkpatrick is scheduled to be sentenced on April 21, 2014.

The charge of theft of government property is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to 3 years of supervised release. Kirkpatrick’s actions not only cost the government money but also damaged the environment and threatened the ecosystem.
