Caldwell Man Sentenced for Social Security Disability Benefits Fraud
BOISE – In a shocking case of deceit, Jose Louis Fernandez, 44, of Caldwell, Idaho, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for social security disability benefits fraud. U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced the sentence, which also includes a hefty price tag: Fernandez must pay $196,409.33 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
According to the plea agreement, Fernandez maintained two separate identities, working under a false name while collecting social security disability benefits under his true name. This audacious scheme allowed him to reap nearly $200,000 in benefits he was not entitled to. The benefits included Medicare insurance and those directed towards his children.
As part of his deceit, Fernandez lied during a Title II benefit review in April 2012, stating that he had not worked since his last disability decision in 2001. However, records show that he was employed at a home-building company from June 2003 until May 2012.
The investigation, led by the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General-Office of Investigations, with assistance from the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, the Caldwell Police Department, and the United States Marshals Service, has brought Fernandez’s actions to light.
Fernandez’s brazen scheme highlights the ongoing battle against those who seek to exploit the system for personal gain. The case serves as a reminder that those who perpetrate such crimes will face severe consequences.
