DANVILLE, VA – Kunta Daniels, 43, is headed to federal prison for over a decade after being sentenced to 156 months for his role in a Danville-area drug operation. The sentence, handed down last week, caps a case that exposed a sophisticated network distributing heroin and cocaine throughout the region.
Daniels pled guilty in October 2021 to one count of possessing with the intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possessing with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. Federal prosecutors detailed how Daniels and his uncle, Joe Ali Daniels, operated a large-scale drug distribution ring, turning a quiet Danville apartment complex into a hub for illicit activity. Joe Ali Daniels, already behind bars, received an 87-month sentence for distributing cocaine and methamphetamine last year.
Court documents reveal that between November 2019 and March 2020, Daniels used a Colonial Court apartment as his residence, while simultaneously renting a second unit directly above as a dedicated “stash house.” This upper-floor apartment was strictly for storing narcotics, a calculated move to keep the drugs separate from his living space and complicate any potential police intrusion. It was a brazen attempt to shield the operation from scrutiny, but ultimately failed.
In March 2020, law enforcement raided the stash house, uncovering a treasure trove of evidence. Agents seized food saver bags, digital scales, substantial quantities of heroin and cocaine, various cutting agents used to increase volume, multiple firearms, body armor, and a staggering $10,000 in cash. The sheer volume of contraband and associated tools painted a clear picture of a well-funded and organized criminal enterprise.
U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh of the Western District of Virginia and Charlie J. Patterson, Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Washington Field Division, announced the sentencing. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Danville Police Department, demonstrates the power of interagency cooperation in dismantling dangerous drug networks. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachel Barish Swartz and Coleman Adams were responsible for prosecuting the case.
The case highlights the persistent threat of drug trafficking in smaller cities and the lengths to which criminals will go to profit from addiction. While Kunta Daniels is now facing a lengthy prison term, authorities are likely investigating potential co-conspirators and continuing efforts to disrupt the flow of narcotics into the Danville area. This conviction serves as a stark warning: dealing in death carries severe consequences.
