Kyle Andrew Umstead, Sex Offense Against Minor, West Virginia 2023

A West Virginia judge presided over a hearing with disturbing evidence regarding a sex offense against a minor.

Kyle Andrew Umstead, 35, of Douglasville, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty today to traveling in interstate commerce to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on March 18, 2023, Umstead traveled from Douglasville, Pennsylvania, to Kanawha County, West Virginia, for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Umstead was arrested by law enforcement officers in Kanawha County. Following his arrest, officers found videos and images of child pornography on Umstead’s cell phone.

Umstead is scheduled to be sentenced on November 16, 2023, and faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

Umstead must also register as a sex offender.

This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

United States Attorney Will Thompson made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force.
