Council Bluffs Man, 31, Sentenced to 120 Months in Prison for Methamphetamine Possession

A Council Bluffs man has been sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. According to public court documents, Kyle Robert Smith was found in possession of a distribution quantity of methamphetamine in April 2024.

After his arrest, Smith directed a co-conspirator to retrieve two pounds of methamphetamine and sell it.

Additionally, in March 2024, Smith was found in possession of a loaded handgun. Smith is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a prior domestic violence conviction.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal made the announcement. This case was investigated by the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Council Bluffs Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

After completing his term of imprisonment, Smith will be required to serve a five-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
