Postal Worker Admits to Stealing Cell Phones in Jersey City
A brazen scheme to steal cell phones from the mail has been brought to a close, thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Kyle Terry, a 36-year-old resident of Jersey City, New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to stealing dozens of cell phones from mail that passed through a postal distribution center where he was employed.
According to documents filed in the case, Terry was a mail handle assistant at the national postal distribution center in Jersey City. From November 1, 2017, to January 28, 2018, Terry stole 39 cell phones, with a total approximate value of $35,000.
The theft of mail by a postal employee charge carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for January 17, 2022.
Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credited special agents of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office, with the investigation leading to Terry’s guilty plea.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Faye Schwartz of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Special Prosecutions Division in Newark.
Terry’s actions not only caused financial loss to the victims but also compromised their personal security. The guilty plea is a significant step towards holding him accountable for his crimes.
