A 25-year-old Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as an armed career criminal following a two-day jury trial in May 2023.
Kyree Bryce Harris was found guilty of possessing a stolen handgun, which he had tucked next to his leg in a vehicle parked outside the Twenty Fifth Street Baptist church in Indianapolis.
According to court documents, IMPD officers were called to the scene on June 17, 2022, after a report of a suspicious vehicle. Harris admitted to carrying the gun for protection.
As a convicted felon, Harris was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his string of six armed robberies of Indianapolis-area convenience stores and Family Dollar stores in January 2017.
U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers said, ‘Armed career criminals like this defendant fuel the gun violence plaguing too many of our neighborhoods.’
Harris will be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for five years after his release from federal prison and will be subject to a $200 fine.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker imposed the sentence.
