Tabares-Martinez, who was apprehended in Guatemala and extradited to the U.S., will now serve out his sentence under federal jurisdiction.
“The extradition and prosecution of Tabares-Martinez are a testament to our dedication to eradicating cartels like LNFM from our communities,” declared U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, underscoring the severity of the threat these organizations pose.
DEA Atlanta Division Acting Special Agent in Charge Jae W. Chung emphasized the agency’s commitment to community safety: “The DEA remains vigilant, removing deadly drugs and criminals from our streets.”
Homeland Security Investigations’ Steven N. Schrank echoed this sentiment, noting that their relentless pursuit of cartels such as LNFM is a direct result of unwavering dedication.
According to court documents, the LNFM cartel is notorious for its annual shipment of massive quantities of meth, opioids, and cocaine across the United States. Chief Judge Leigh Martin May handed down the sentence today, following Tabares-Martinez’s guilty plea to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The drug enforcement agencies involved in this case include the DEA, Department of Homeland Security, and Guatemalan law enforcement, who played a crucial role in his arrest.
