The unsealing of an Indictment against Gomez-Martinez by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton and DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank A. Tarentino marks a significant victory in the fight against the drug cartels. Gomez-Martinez, once the operational chief of La Familia Michoacana (‘LFM’), is alleged to have been at the helm of operations that imported massive quantities of illegal drugs into the U.S.
Clayton and Tarentino emphasized their commitment to dismantling the cartels and ensuring justice for those affected by their ruthless activities. ‘La Familia Michoacana has caused immense harm, not only in Mexico but also here in the United States,’ they said.
The Indictment details Gomez-Martinez’s involvement with LFM, which included control of drug manufacturing and distribution in Michoacan, violence against law enforcement, and the acquisition of weapons. His statements, including a 2009 interview where he claimed responsibility for controlling the port city of Lazaro Cardenas, highlight his role as a public face of the organization.
Gomez-Martinez was transferred to the U.S. on August 12, 2025, from Mexico under the country’s National Security law, following charges related to drug-trafficking, hostage-taking, kidnapping, and other crimes. He is now facing the music in a U.S. court, with his fate hanging in the balance.
