A La Vista man has been sentenced to time served in jail and three years of supervised release after being convicted of obtaining US citizenship by fraud, federal authorities announced.
Zahid Maqsood, 56, was sentenced by the Honorable Laurie Smith Camp for his conviction on an unlawful procurement of citizenship/naturalization charge.
As part of the sentence, Maqsood’s citizenship was also revoked.
Maqsood, who immigrated to the US from Pakistan in 1990, initially applied for asylum using a different name. His application was denied, and he was ordered removed from the country.
However, he returned to the US in 2006 on an immigrant visa using the name ‘Maqsood’ and later applied for naturalization in 2012. He was granted citizenship after an interview with a US Citizenship and Immigration Services agent.
However, it was later discovered that several statements made by Maqsood in his citizenship application and interview were false.
Maqsood pleaded guilty to the offense on October 3, 2017, and upon conviction, federal law mandates the judge declare his citizenship void and his naturalization certificate cancelled.
The case was investigated by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Removal Operations.
