Anton Andreyevich Iagounov, Impersonating a Federal Officer, California 2022

Anton Andreyevich Iagounov, 38, of South Lake Tahoe, California, has been hit with a four-count indictment for his brazen act of falsely impersonating a federal officer. According to the Department of Justice’s USAO, Iagounov concocted and disseminated false investigative documents to dupe law enforcement agencies into providing him with government documents and sensitive information.

The court documents detail how Iagounov, on July 5, 2022, sent a forged search warrant to the U.S. Capitol Police, falsely claiming it was signed by a Special Agent of the NASA Office of the Inspector General (NASA-OIG). The following day, he repeated the deceit, sending another fake search warrant to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, using an email address designed to resemble a government agency’s domain.

On July 18, Iagounov struck again, sending a similar fraudulent document to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Georgia. The final act in this web of deceit occurred on July 24 when he faxed a letter from a real NASA employee’s name to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, demanding an immediate judge’s signature on a non-existent search warrant.

The scheme unraveled due to the diligent work of the FBI and the NASA Office of the Inspector General, with support from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Conolly is handling the prosecution.

Should Iagounov be found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for each count. The defendant remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, as per the court’s discretion after considering applicable factors and guidelines.
