Eric Brewer, Fentanyl Tampering, Florida 2024

Tampa, FL – The grim halls of justice have once again echoed with a verdict of recklessness and greed as Eric Brewer, 30, of Lakeland, has been sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison for his despicable act of tampering with fentanyl at various hospitals in the Tampa Bay area.

Brewer, a Florida-licensed registered nurse, pleaded guilty on April 28, 2025, to charges of tampering with a consumer product and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. His actions were not only criminally negligent but also placed countless patients’ lives at severe risk.

Court documents reveal that Brewer’s malevolent scheme involved the deliberate removal of fentanyl from its intended patient containers. He would then either dilute it with another substance or inject it into his own body, all under the guise of professional medical care.

Between June 2 and September 12, 2023, Brewer executed this heinous act on seven occasions, stealing not just the fentanyl but also needles, syringes, and saline flushes from hospital supply rooms. His brazen thefts were conducted with such disregard for human life that they bordered on premeditated murder.

The revelation of Brewer’s monstrous behavior came to light when his erratic behavior during a seemingly routine duty shift raised red flags among hospital administrators. His descent into debauchery was confirmed with the discovery of fentanyl in his own system, leading to his termination and subsequent downfall.

This case has been a joint effort by the Food and Drug Administration – Office of Criminal Investigations and the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, prosecuted with a steely resolve by Assistant United States Attorney Greg Pizzo. The sentence handed down is a stark reminder that even in the guise of healthcare, the line between heroism and villainy can be perilously thin.
