Jorge Rocha, Assaulting a Border Patrol Agent, Texas 2023

LAREDO, Texas – Jorge Rocha, a 40-year-old Laredo resident, is facing nearly two decades behind bars after a federal jury found him guilty of assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol (BP) agent and possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced the sentencing today, a stark warning to those who think they can evade justice by turning violent.

The conviction came swiftly on July 18, 2016, after a mere 20 minutes of jury deliberation. Rocha’s attempt to flee from law enforcement near the River Drive Mall on January 29, 2016, quickly devolved into a violent confrontation. Testimony revealed that when approached by the BP agent, Rocha bolted, ditching a concealed bag in the process.

The agent pursued, and the situation escalated. Rocha didn’t just run; he actively resisted arrest, unleashing a flurry of blows to the agent’s face and head. The agent sustained lacerations and bruises during the attack, requiring backup to forcibly subdue Rocha. It was a brazen act of violence, a desperate attempt to avoid accountability.

The bag Rocha discarded contained a hefty 5.9 pounds of methamphetamine, with a street value of $188,890. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Rocha was moving significant quantities of the deadly drug through the Laredo area. The evidence presented at trial painted a clear picture of a calculated criminal enterprise.

U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo, who presided over the trial, handed down a severe sentence: 235 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. This isn’t just about punishing Rocha; it’s about sending a message that attacks on federal officers and drug trafficking will not be tolerated. Rocha remains in custody pending transfer to a Bureau of Prisons facility.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mike Eaton and Julian Castaneda successfully prosecuted the case, securing a conviction that reflects the seriousness of Rocha’s crimes. This case underscores the dangers faced by BP agents on the border and the commitment of federal authorities to dismantle drug trafficking operations.
