Newark Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Union County Carjacking

Larry Brown, a 24-year-old man from Newark, was sentenced to 121 months in prison for a carjacking that occurred in December 2012 in Union County, New Jersey.

The crime took place on December 26, 2012, in Hillside, where Brown pointed a firearm at a victim and ordered them to get out of a parked 2012 BMW X5. After the victim exited the vehicle, they were robbed of personal items by a second individual. Brown and the other individual then entered the victim’s vehicle and fled the area.

The vehicle was later located in East Orange, where law enforcement officers observed Brown and another individual walking away from the carjacked vehicle. Brown later admitted to carjacking the vehicle and told law enforcement officers where he had put the keys to the carjacked vehicle and the gun he used during the carjacking, both of which were recovered by law enforcement officers.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Martini sentenced Brown to five years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $1,850 in restitution.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited various law enforcement agencies with the investigation leading to Brown’s sentencing, including the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, the New Jersey State Police, the FBI, the Hillside Police Department, the East Orange Police Department, and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.

The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucy Muzzy of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark. Defense counsel was Carol Gillen Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender, Newark.
