Newport News, Va. – The gritty streets of Newport News echoed with justice as Larry Donnell Jones, a 45-year-old man with an extensive rap sheet, was sentenced today to three years and ten months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, the fateful day began on June 8, 2022, when Newport News Police (NNPD) were hot on the trail of Jones. The wanted man was sought on several outstanding arrest warrants, including those related to firearms offenses. As luck would have it, NNPD officers caught a glimpse of Jones leaving a residence in a vehicle, and when they stopped him, he attempted to flee on foot. But Jones’s flight was short-lived; the police quickly apprehended him.
During a lawful search of the residence Jones had been occupying, officers uncovered a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, fully loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition. The weapon was found to belong to Jones himself, a man who has previously been convicted for drug distribution, possession of cocaine, and carrying a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance.
Jones’s previous felony convictions make him legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, yet he brazenly ignored the law. Today’s sentence is a stark reminder that such actions come with severe consequences. The prosecution was led by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyson C. Yates, an Assistant Attorney General with the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.
The announcement of Jones’s sentence came from Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Jason Miyares, Attorney General of Virginia; Derek W. Gordon, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington, D.C.; and Steve R. Drew, Chief of Newport News Police, who all stood united against crime.
