Cyberstalking Plot Unfolds in Maine
A Rhode Island man has pleaded guilty to cyberstalking a Maine woman, despite a restraining order and a protection from abuse order.
The victim, a Maine resident, had previously obtained a restraining order in Maryland after ending their brief marriage in 2016. However, the defendant, Larry Spencer, continued to harass and intimidate her on social media and by email.
Spencer’s actions did not cease even after the victim relocated to Maine in 2018 and obtained a protection from abuse order in March 2019. The order explicitly stated that Spencer shall not post any direct or indirect threats about or concerning the plaintiff on social media/online.
Despite this explicit language, Spencer continued to engage in threatening behavior, which caught the attention of law enforcement. The FBI investigated the case and ultimately charged Spencer with cyberstalking.
Spencer, 63, of Providence, Rhode Island and formerly of Maryland, faces up to five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the severity of cyberstalking and the importance of respecting restraining orders and protection from abuse orders.
