Threats from Afar: Minnesota Man Sent Repeated Messages to Woman and Her Family in South Dakota
A 38-year-old man from Piedmont, South Dakota, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for sending threatening communications to a woman and her family in Minnesota.
Larry Wenthold, age 38, was living in Minnesota at the time of the alleged incidents, but his actions caused fear for the safety of the woman and her mother and sister in South Dakota.
The charges, which include Threatening Communications, Stalking, and Repeated Telephone Calls, were brought against Wenthold after he allegedly sent repeated texts and telephone calls to the woman and her family. These communications threatened their lives and put them in fear of death or serious bodily injury.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The charges are merely accusations, and Wenthold is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the United States Marshals Service, with U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuting the case.
Larry Wenthold was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
