Las Cruces Man Jailed for Cocaine Trafficking
Gilbert G. Caldwell, 45, of Las Cruces, N.M., has been sentenced to 120 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his cocaine trafficking conviction.
The conviction stems from Caldwell’s arrest on February 12, 2015, when he attempted to purchase 125 grams of cocaine from undercover law enforcement agents in Doña Ana County, N.M.
Caldwell was subsequently indicted on May 28, 2015, and entered a guilty plea on December 15, 2015. In doing so, he admitted to meeting an undercover narcotics agent at the Sunland Park Casino and providing $4,500.00 in exchange for a white powder he believed was cocaine, but was actually fake.
Caldwell intended to sell the cocaine to others, but was instead apprehended by law enforcement. The case was investigated by the Las Cruces office of the DEA and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis A. Martinez of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office.
Caldwell’s sentencing marks the latest development in a long-running investigation into cocaine trafficking in the region. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the sale and distribution of illicit substances.
As part of his supervised release, Caldwell will be subject to strict conditions, including regular check-ins with his probation officer and any additional requirements deemed necessary by the court.
Caldwell’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder of the severity of the penalties associated with cocaine trafficking. The case is a stark illustration of the risks and consequences faced by those who engage in such activity.
