LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A brazen daylight robbery of a local coin and jewelry store has ended with a guilty plea from 22-year-old Noah Patrick Fields. Fields terrorized an elderly store owner and a customer, brandishing a firearm during the commission of the crime, according to a statement released today by Acting U.S. Attorney Steven W. Myhre for the District of Nevada.
Fields pleaded guilty to one count each of interference with commerce by robbery and use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan accepted the plea, setting a sentencing date for August 24, 2017. The details revealed paint a picture of a calculated, yet callous, act of violence committed against vulnerable victims.
The robbery occurred on October 14, 2016. Fields, along with a still-unnamed co-conspirator, stormed the store, immediately escalating the situation with the display of a handgun. Fields personally held both a customer and the 90-year-old store owner at gunpoint while his accomplice ransacked the front display case. The haul included $3,500 in cash and a staggering $42,424 worth of valuable coins, silver, and gold bullion.
The elderly store owner, a lifetime Las Vegas resident, was left shaken but thankfully unharmed. Investigators say the victim’s decades of hard work and savings were directly targeted by Fields and his accomplice. The brazen nature of the crime, preying on the elderly, adds another layer of disgust to an already reprehensible act.
At sentencing, Fields is staring down the barrel of a potentially lengthy prison term. The charge of interference with commerce by robbery carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the use of a firearm during the commission of the crime triggers a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, extending potentially to life in prison, along with another $250,000 fine. He will likely receive both sentences consecutively.
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kilby Macfadden is prosecuting the case, and is expected to push for the maximum sentence allowable under federal law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing hearing next month.
