Las Vegas Man Sentenced to 13 Years for Child Sex Trafficking
Sha-Ron Haines, 20, has been sentenced to 156 months in prison, plus lifetime supervised release, for his role in forcing two minor girls to work as child prostitutes.
Haines and his co-defendant, Tyral Edward King, 21, were arrested in 2014 as part of ‘Operation Protect the Powerless,’ a joint law enforcement operation aimed at catching child predators in southern Nevada.
According to court records, in May 2014, Haines and King drove the 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl from Las Vegas to Pomona, California, and Los Angeles, California, with the intent that they engage in prostitution.
The girls were forced to turn over all the money they earned to Haines and King, who used their online advertisements on ‘Backpage’ to set up prostitution dates for the minors in California.
The 17-year-old girl was arrested by an undercover Los Angeles police officer who had responded to one of the advertisements on ‘Backpage,’ while the 15-year-old girl later returned home to Las Vegas on a bus.
Haines was convicted by a jury on August 25, 2015, of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a child, sex trafficking of a child, conspiracy to transport a minor for prostitution, and transportation of a minor for prostitution.
His co-defendant, Tyral Edward King, pleaded guilty on August 14, 2015, to one count of transportation of an individual for the purpose of prostitution, and was sentenced on March 1, 2016, to 30 months in prison.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lisa C. Cartier-Giroux and Susan Cushman.
