Las Vegas Straw Purchaser Sentenced for Gun Smuggling Scheme

ST. THOMAS, USVI – A Las Vegas resident has been handed a severe sentence for his role in a scheme to traffic firearms across state lines, according to U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert.

Michael Kelly, 30, of Las Vegas, NV, was sentenced today to 21 months imprisonment followed by a three-year term of supervised release for assisting in the trafficking of firearms in interstate commerce.

Court documents reveal that on April 16, 2016, Kelly purchased two firearms from a dealer in Las Vegas. He then provided them to his co-defendant, Naeem Smith, who paid him $1,200.00 for the purchase. This was followed by another two purchases and payments totaling $1,800.00.

Naeem Smith traveled with the firearms to St. Thomas on April 28, 2016, where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers discovered multiple firearms during an inspection at the Cyril E. King Airport.

The ATF investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Delia Smith and Juan Albino handling the prosecution.

This operation is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, which aims to tackle violent crime problems in communities and develop comprehensive solutions. For more information on the initiative, visit https://www.justice.gov/psn.
