Laurie Ann Roszelle Indicted for Wire Fraud, Fort Myers FL, 2024

A hard-hitting indictment has been unsealed against Fort Myers resident Laurie Ann Roszelle, charging her with one count of wire fraud. If convicted, Roszelle faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

The indictment alleges that for nearly 19 years after her mother’s death in 2005, Roszelle schemed to wrongfully receive United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits intended for her mother. To effectuate the scheme, Roszelle falsified her mother’s signature in responding to VA correspondence and represented, in telephone and in-person interviews with the VA, that her mother was still alive years after her mother’s death.

The indictment notifies Roszelle that the United States is seeking an order of forfeiture in the amount of $338,364.66, the proceeds of the charged criminal conduct. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.

According to the indictment, Roszelle’s scheme was uncovered by the Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin S. Winter.

Roszelle’s alleged crimes are a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding the integrity of our nation’s benefits programs. The VA works tirelessly to provide support to our nation’s veterans, and it’s heartbreaking to see individuals like Roszelle exploit this system for personal gain.

The unsealing of this indictment is a significant step forward in holding Roszelle accountable for her alleged crimes. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served and that our nation’s veterans receive the support they deserve.
