GRAVE CONSEQUENCES: Federal authorities have charged a Lawrence County man with multiple counts of child exploitation, sparking a heated debate about online safety and the dark web.
A 13-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges David Edward Collier, 46, of Lawrence County, with four counts of sexual exploitation of children, eight counts of transportation of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography.
According to the indictment, between January 2017 and August 2022, Collier allegedly used, induced, or coerced minor children to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing any visual depiction of that conduct. Between October 2022 and September 2023, Collier transported the child pornography, and Collier was also charged with possession of child pornography.
FBI North Alabama Violent Crime Task Force and Cybercrime Squad investigated the case, with assistance from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Moulton Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Huntsville Police Department, and Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney R. Leann White is prosecuting the case.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the National Children’s Advocacy Center have partnered to release a digital series educating parents and caretakers about sextortion and online safety. The series offers three-to-five-minute videos about current online safety topics and provides essential information about the true dangers of online activities.
