Lawrence Parker III, Malicious Mischief, South Dakota 2016

A disturbing case of Malicious Mischief in South Dakota has come to a close. Lawrence Parker III, a 27-year-old man from Eagle Butte, was sentenced to 3 years of probation after destroying an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) belonging to the State Bank of Eagle Butte.

According to court documents, Parker attempted to withdraw money from his account using the ATM on June 4, 2016, but was unable to do so due to reaching his daily withdrawal limit. In a fit of rage, he destroyed the screen on the ATM, causing significant damage.

The incident was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, who took swift action to bring Parker to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case, securing a guilty plea from Parker on July 23, 2018.

Parker was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury on October 12, 2016, and faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. However, thanks to the efforts of his defense team, he was able to secure a more lenient sentence.

On October 2, 2018, U.S. District Court Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence, which included 3 years of probation, restitution in the amount of $2,536.24, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Parker was released from custody following sentencing, bringing an end to a tumultuous chapter in his life. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting public property and the consequences of destructive behavior.
