Lee Underwood, Making Destructive Devices, Indiana 2023

In a disturbing case of homemade explosives, Lee Underwood, a 28-year-old Elkhart man, was sentenced to 51 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release for making destructive devices.

According to court documents, Underwood created at least five to six pipe bombs in late 2017 and early 2018 while under the influence of methamphetamine and other controlled substances.

The devices were then discarded from a vehicle and left near a busy intersection for several weeks, posing a significant threat to public safety.

Underwood’s reckless behavior didn’t stop there. He fled from law enforcement multiple times, including an instance where a passenger in his vehicle shot at a police car that was in pursuit.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from several local law enforcement agencies, including the Indiana State Police, Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, and the South Bend Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly Donnelly handled the case, securing a significant conviction for the defendant’s heinous crimes.

The sentencing of Lee Underwood serves as a harsh reminder of the devastating consequences of manufacturing and using homemade explosives. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
