Murray Ford Charged in Credit Union Heist

A 57-year-old Hammond man is behind bars after a brazen credit union robbery that left employees shaken and a large sum of money missing.

According to court documents, Murray Ford, of Hammond, Indiana, entered the Teacher’s Credit Union in Hammond on October 13, 2020, wearing sunglasses and a mask. The suspect brandished a firearm and demanded cash from employees, who handed over an estimated $14,000.

Ford allegedly fled the scene on foot and was later tracked down by agents who executed a search warrant on his apartment. During the search, authorities discovered approximately $14,000 in cash, some of which was identified as stolen credit union funds, along with sunglasses matching the suspect’s description and a silver revolver.

U.S. Attorney Kirsch announced the charges against Ford, who is facing a single count of credit union robbery. While the complaint is merely an allegation, Ford is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Padilla is leading the prosecution of Ford’s case, assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hammond Police Department. If convicted, Ford faces an undetermined sentence, which will be determined by the judge after considering federal statutes and sentencing guidelines.
