CLARKSVILLE, TN – A former school nurse is facing a lifetime behind bars after federal authorities uncovered a sickening trove of child pornography and covert recordings linked to his time at North East High School. Leon B. Hensley, 40, formerly of Clarksville and currently residing in Lake Wales, Florida, was arrested this morning and will appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Tampa.
The investigation began in November 2019 when the Clarksville Police Department (CPD) received a tip from the Tennessee Department of Children Services. Hensley allegedly sent a nude image of an adult female via text message to a minor female student, and had solicited the minor to participate in a photoshoot. A search of Hensley’s phone quickly revealed a disturbing pattern of images depicting the sexual exploitation of children. A subsequent search of his residence turned up numerous electronic devices, including a small, hidden video camera.
The sheer volume of illicit material prompted the U.S. Secret Service to join the investigation, conducting a forensic examination of Hensley’s devices. Agents discovered hundreds of imagery files showing what appeared to be unidentified minor females secretly photographed while using a restroom. Disturbingly, the images also included females in hospital examination rooms, both pre- and post-operation, and nude females in tanning beds. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents later joined the probe, and to date, over 700 imagery files have been recovered.
Investigators determined the hidden camera was strategically positioned within the private student bathroom in the nurse’s station at North East High School. The camera was at toilet seat level, directly in front of the toilet, and designed to capture lewd images. Further investigation revealed that other images geolocate to Tennova Hospital in Clarksville, where Hensley was previously employed. The scope of the alleged abuse is chilling; authorities suspect more than 40 students at NEHS, ranging in age from 12 to 17, may be victims.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee announced the charges against Hensley, which include attempted production of child pornography. If convicted, Hensley faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify all potential victims and the full extent of the abuse.
The case is a joint effort between Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI, and the Clarksville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Monica Morrison and Carrie Daughtrey are prosecuting the case. It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and Hensley is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence uncovered paints a horrifying picture of a trusted figure abusing his position of authority and violating the innocence of children.
