Cedar Rapids Man, Leon Sheley, Pleads Guilty to Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm
A convicted felon from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm, according to a recent court filing. Leon Sheley, 23, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm in federal court in Cedar Rapids on July 19, 2021.
The charges against Sheley stem from an incident on May 20, 2020, in which he knowingly possessed a pistol despite having prior convictions for theft in the second degree in 2016, theft in the first degree in 2016, and escape from custody in 2017.
Sheley now faces a possible maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. He remains in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Court file information is available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
Sheley’s sentencing will be set after a presentence report is prepared. For now, he remains in custody, facing a potential maximum sentence of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The community can only hope that this conviction serves as a deterrent to others who would consider breaking the law.
This case highlights the importance of addressing violent crime in our communities. By working together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.
