Lewisburg Prison Inmates Charged with Deadly Assault
A federal grand jury in Williamsport has indicted four Lewisburg Federal Prison inmates for assault with a deadly weapon. The indictment comes after a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service.
The inmates, identified as 40-year-old Christopher Goins, 28-year-old Ashley Dixon, 36-year-old Troi Venable, and 31-year-old Perlie Johnson, are accused of conspiring to assault a fellow inmate at the United States Penitentiary at Lewisburg in November 2014. The assault resulted in serious injury to the victim.
According to US Attorney Peter Smith, the indictment alleges that the four inmates armed themselves with improvised weapons and carried out the assault. The maximum penalty for each count is 10 years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000.
In a separate incident, Christopher Goins is alleged to have committed a second assault on a different inmate in December 2014, resulting in serious bodily injury to the victim. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur has been assigned to prosecute the case. The indictment serves as an allegation, and all persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines require the judge to consider various factors, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, the history and characteristics of the defendant, and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public, and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational, and medical needs.
