Lexington, Ky. – Daniel Matthews, a 36-year-old man from Lexington, Kentucky, has been handed down a tough sentence by U.S. District Judge Claria Horn Boom on Monday. Matthews was sentenced to 228 months for possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, including a staggering 400 grams of fentanyl and over 50 grams of methamphetamine, as well as possession of a firearm used in furtherance of drug trafficking.
The DOJ’s USAO in Kentucky revealed that on August 1, 2023, Matthews was en route to make a significant drug delivery when law enforcement intercepted his vehicle. They seized $3,956 in cash, 177 grams of fentanyl pills, and a loaded pistol from the back pocket of his seat. A subsequent search warrant at Matthews’ residence uncovered over 15,000 fentanyl pills (nearly 1.5 kilograms of fentanyl) and more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.
Under federal law, Matthews is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence, followed by five years under U.S. Probation Office supervision upon release. The sentence was announced by Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Shawn Morrow, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Louisville Field Division; and Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police.
The ATF and KSP conducted the investigation that led to Matthews’ conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Trimble prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States. The case was part of the Department of Justice’s ‘Project Safe Neighborhoods’ Program, which aims to reduce violent crime through a multifaceted approach involving law enforcement, prevention, and reentry efforts.
In the Eastern District of Kentucky, U.S. Attorney Shier coordinates PSN initiatives with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. The PSN program is a nationwide strategy that seeks to make communities safer by investigating and prosecuting violent crime.
