Rayzohn Bertrand, Failure to Appear After Release, South Dakota 2025

RAPID CITY – The U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Dakota has delivered a stark message with the sentencing of 24-year-old Rayzohn Bertrand for his brazen disregard for the legal system. Bertrand, who was convicted of Failure to Appear After Release, received a two-and-a-half year federal prison sentence from Judge Camela C. Theeler on July 21, 2025.

Bertrand’s saga began with his prior conviction as a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, leading to strict conditions of supervised release. Despite these restrictions, Bertrand allegedly violated the terms and was arrested, setting off a chain of events that culminated in today’s sentencing.

According to the court records, Bertrand was released from custody pending his revocation hearing, with clear instructions to appear for all court proceedings. However, he skipped out on his chance to face justice, violating federal law and further incriminating himself. On July 21, he confessed to the supervised release violation and was handed a sentence of an additional six months in federal prison.

This enhanced sentence will run consecutively to the initial 30-month term, leaving Bertrand with a total of two years and six months behind bars. He is also obligated to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term, and has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation into Bertrand’s transgressions was led by U.S. Marshals Service and the Summerset Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder was the lead prosecutor in this case, ensuring that justice was served for the breach of his supervised release conditions.

Bertrand has been immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will begin serving his sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for ignoring court orders and failing to face the music when it comes to legal obligations.
