FRANKFORT, Ky. – Darnell Thomas Jr., 32, of Lexington, Kentucky, will spend the next two decades behind bars after being sentenced to 240 months in federal prison Monday for orchestrating a dangerous fentanyl and heroin trafficking ring. U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove handed down the sentence, a significant blow to the flow of deadly narcotics through the Bluegrass State.
Thomas was convicted of conspiracy to distribute 10 grams or more of fluorofentanyl, 40 grams or more of a mixture containing fentanyl, and heroin, as well as distribution of 40 grams or more of fentanyl. The case, built on solid police work and a confidential informant, revealed a calculated operation spanning October to December 2022. Thomas didn’t sling dope himself all the time; he directed co-defendants Melvin Coffey, 31, and Jaden Bradshaw, 23, to make sales on his behalf – five separate transactions in Fayette and Madison Counties, to be exact.
The feds say Thomas wasn’t a novice. Court documents reveal a prior history of drug dealing, with convictions for trafficking heroin in 2016 and cocaine in 2018. This repeat offender status clearly weighed heavily on Judge Van Tatenhove’s decision. Each of the five drug buys, facilitated by the informant, involved multiple ounces of the lethal mixture hitting the streets. This wasn’t small-time; it was a substantial contribution to the opioid crisis gripping the nation.
Coffey, a key player in the conspiracy, already received 57 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Bradshaw, the lower-level operative, got a lighter sentence of 24 months, also with three years of supervised release. But Thomas, as the ringleader, bore the brunt of the justice system’s response. Federal law dictates that all three men must serve at least 85 percent of their sentences before even being considered for release.
“This sentence underscores our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations and holding accountable those who profit from the misery of others,” stated Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Louisville Field Division and the Gateway High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paco Villalobos skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the lengthy prison term for Thomas.
Upon his eventual release, Thomas will face an additional eight years of supervised release, a constant reminder of his crimes. This case serves as a stark warning: peddling poison in Kentucky will be met with the full force of federal law. The HIDTA Task Force continues to target drug networks, aiming to stem the tide of fentanyl and heroin flooding communities across the state.
