GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — A chilling three-count indictment has been filed against Peter J. Schmidt, a 26-year-old resident of Lexington, Ohio, for his alleged involvement in child pornography. United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach announced the charges.
Schmidt stands accused of using and coercing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct on or about July 7 and 8, 2006, with the intention of producing visual depictions, which were later transported across state and international lines.
According to the indictment, Schmidt distributed five computer image files containing real minors engaged in explicit acts on March 11, 2013. Additionally, he is charged with possessing a computer disk with similar content on June 4, 2013.
In light of his charges, if convicted, Schmidt could face a sentence to be determined by the court, taking into account his prior criminal record and role in the offense. However, sentences are capped at the statutory maximum, often less severe.
Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan is handling the prosecution, while the Canton office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.
The defendant, Peter J. Schmidt, enjoys his constitutional right to a fair trial, where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
